The New York Times on Tuesday ran a huge above-the-fold A1 picture of Raquel Rodríguez (and honored her Spanish accent in print), a Mexican lady in San Antonio. In a long article by Julia Preston, Rodríguez pretty much epitomizes the experience of all the hard-working, ascendant Mexican ladies I've ever known, starting with my mother Norma. Particularly the part about being seen as "Santa" when returning south of the border with gifts and supplies for relatives; that killed me. Each December, my family did the same. In the side-bar, Preston makes some broad generalizations about Mexican immigrants:
Mexicans have not always shown a passion for learning English and becoming American citizens.
The stories are part of a series called "Three Sisters."
