When it comes to somber, hypnotic music that gets you feeling a little sorry for everything but also hopeful about the triumph of electro in the mid-late 2000s, nothing tops "Boy from School" by Londoners Hot Chip. Pitchfork named it the No. 7 best track of 2006, beat in its genre only by those icy cool Swedes, The Knife. Since being introduced to "Boy From School" last summer, I've found myself unable to grow tired of its disco wails. For driving, it seems to suit the shifty L.A. streetscape on Friday afternoons around dusk. Here is Hot Chip doing it live and extended in New York last August, playing up the track's surprising danceability. The visuals are bad but the audio is so crisp and stirring:
