On Sunday you were at the Echo. On Monday you were at Spaceland or the Silver Lake Lounge. On Tuesday you were at the Cha Cha. Or your favorite "dive." Or even, yes, Cinespace. On Wednesday you were at Barragan's for $2 margaritas and then somehow you stumbled to the dance floor at Shortstop or maybe the Airliner. Now it's Thursday, and, inexplicably, you're desperate to go out again.
Decisions. You pride yourself on never going into Hollywood unless you're specifically invited to something. Friday is coming up and clubs on weekends are an absolute no-no (only "parties" on weekend nights, of course). Wednesday night is always the most jam-packed of the week, so you want something unexpected, but not hectic. Inevitably, around midnight, you are drawn to La Cita on Hill Street in downtown. Once upon a time this used to be your typical L.A. cantina, drawing work-a-day vaqueros and the loose ladies of the night who follow them, gathered there for ranchera jams and bargirls with killer curves. But that was before. While the red-hued ostentatious decor remains, La Cita has flipped to the hipsters, those cannibals of cool. These days, the kids that go to the new La Cita are doing their best to 'keep it real': they tend to be a little hip-hop and new wave-influenced, and a little on the wild side. Remarkably "indie" for the new downtown. As such, it's a few steps up from the over-exposed Cobrasnake/Dim Mak/Hollywood scene and the glossy crowd it draws, but don't expect that to last for long. Anyway, Thursdays is when to go. And for the sake of interesting music and interesting style-watching, it's worth it.
Wait. You don't know. You hesitate. You don't want to be ... predictable. You're an individual! If someone thrusts a camera in your face, you swat it away, disgusted. ("Amateur party photography is so 2004!") But it's Thursday. You're feeling good, and you're bored. You've got new shoes to show off. You want to "see people." And let's be honest. When it comes to big-city hipster cool-fucking, resistance is futile.
The only question now is, when will "Blue States Lose" notice?
