Just before 2 a.m. a faint shadow began overtaking the top edge of the full moon in the southeast sky. We watched it from the concrete on my stoop on my hill here on the edge of California. The night was cool.
By 3 a.m. the shadow had completely darkened the whiteness of the dangling globe and gave it a spooky red sheen, as if the moon were opaque and we were watching light filter through from the other side of the galaxy.
