Here's up-and-coming Mexico City boxer Christian Uruzquieta saluting his fans after winning a 4-round decision against rival Javier Rivas, on April 23, the night before the swine flu outbreak. The match was part of a Cinturon de Oro line-up at the Woda nightclub near the Cuatro Caminos transit hub, on the border with Naucalpan.
Christian has several victories already under his belt. He is trained by his father and uncle, the Uruzquieta brothers of the Colonia Zapata Vela in Iztacalco, friends of friends of my father, who is also a trainer back in San Diego, Calif.
Cinturon de Oro offers serious boxing fans regular events focusing on talented young D.F. fighters in professional venues. An all-around solid entertainment. Currently however, boxing in Mexico City doesn't much of a Web presence.
** Here's another family tie I just found: Photos of my older brother Sergio, a painter and tattoo artist, in action in the ring during a recent mixed martial arts match in Long Beach. Surge has a good record, but just this time, he was outgunned.
... Knowing him, though, he'll be sure to get revenge.
* And how am I doing? ... Ishmael Reed said it best: Writin' is fightin'.
